37 ft. Tall Pivot Doors

If you’re designing a conference center with 40 ft. ceilings and need a row of 37 ft. tall pivot doors to act as room dividers, you are going to be faced with the issues concerning strength vs. weight. In order to keep the 37 ft. tall doors from warping, your design team is faced with the challenge.

If you dared to think, “What if I could have it all?” If it were possible, you would like to have insulation for its sound deadening qualities and climate control. Then you could just hang insulated baffles, but you would compromise the function of have pivot doors and they could easily fail as they have no strength.

When is a door not a door? When it fails to function as a door.

The problem is that all door core materials are either not high precision, too heavy or will move when exposed to moisture, humidity or change in temperature resulting in door failure.

Finishing a door blank:

There are two types of finish for door blanks:  paint grade and wood grain.  Paint grade includes such finishes as metal, Masonite, marine plywood, etc.  Wood grain finish includes such finish as solid wood stave and thin veneer.

Engineered Wood Lauded As Superior Building Material

Cross-laminated timber is being recognized again, this time by Clay Risen in the March 2014 issue of Popular Science. His article claims that wood is the “most advanced building material.” Commonly known as CLT, cross-laminated timber uses the same cross-grain construction concept that gives plywood its great versatility.

While conventional wood-frame construction is expected to continue as preferred for building residences, CLT’s qualities outstrip those of conventional wood. CLT is stronger, and can be used in high-rise buildings. CLT was used in a recently-completed 10-story apartment building in Australia, and has been approved for use in a 34-story tower to be built in Sweden. It is also safer in a fire than steel, and more eco-friendly than steel or concrete.
