Dual Pocket Doors Made with Sing Core

People often think of doors as simple barriers or entryways, but at Sing Core, we know that a door can be much more than that. Doors can be elegant accents to a room’s design, or a seamless way to change a room’s layout. If done right, they can even be part of a room’s main design feature, such as in the example we’re showing you today.

This customer needed a way to separate two areas of the house, but was fairly limited in their options due to their design preference. Due to the height of the room, a standard door would not work unless they expanded on the center wall, which would majorly damage the flow and beauty of the room. A normal sliding door would work, but the dimensions would be incredibly difficult to get right. The door would have to be incredibly tall, yet narrow, which would need to be custom made. If this was done with traditional materials, the doors would likely be too heavy to work reliably, and could damage their hardware. Sing Core, however, was a great solution.

Because Sing Core panels are made with a honeycomb core, they are incredibly lightweight, yet still very strong. This means that the custom doors would still be sturdy and long lasting, but due to their low weight, they’d also be easy to use and be far less likely to damage their hardware. In fact, each of these doors only weigh 200 pounds, despite being over 13 feet tall.

These twin pocket doors measure 40 inches wide by 158 inches tall, and are 2.5 inches thick. This tall and narrow design worked beautifully for the room, though is definitely a non-standard size. Getting a door like this without having it custom made would be impossible, but luckily Sing Core specializes in large, high end custom doors.

A Sing Core door can be ordered to nearly any shape or size, and are strong, lightweight, and durable. One major concern with large doors is the possibility of warping, which gets exponentially more likely, and often exponentially worse, with larger doors. In the case of this project, even just a slight warp could ruin the entire system. A little bend or twist could leave a door stuck in its pocket, or scraping the side as it is opened and closed, damaging both the door and the wall nearby. There are many ways a warp can hinder or ruin a door, and often, warps are irrecoverable. Sing Core doors are guaranteed to never warp, and we can make that claim due to our innovative and patented honeycomb core. In fact, each door panel comes with a 50 Year Warp-Free and Structural Guarantee, so you can rest easy without worrying about your door failing on you.

Sing Core is thrilled to have had the chance to work on this beautiful project, and we hope to work on your next amazing project with you. Submit a quote request on our website to learn what we can do for you!

Millennium Tower Seattle

The Millennium Tower

The skyline of Seattle is adorned with beautiful spires and towers, and the Millennium Tower is one of the structures to call that sky home. Standing at over 280 feet tall, the Millennium Tower is a testament to luxury and design, as it is home to 19 prestigious condos and sits right off the water in Downtown Seattle.

The Millennium Tower was designed by the Olson Kundig architect firm, and the individual homes within were designed by the architects from Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership. This brilliant combination of efforts has led to one of the most incredible living spaces in the Seattle area, and Sing Core is honored to have been involved in this project.

Sing Core was contacted regarding a large pocket door for the interior of the tower, specifically within one of the condos, measuring 54.5 tall inches by 111.5 inches wide, and 2.25 inches thick. This door weighs approximately 200 pounds, which is substantially less than a door of this size would if made using traditional methods and materials.

Why Sing Core?

Sing Core has long been sought after for use in high end and luxury homes, penthouses, and more. Our patented and patent-pending technologies allow us to create the highest quality lightweight door and wall panels, without compromising on strength or durability. Our panels can be made to nearly any size and specification, and are pound-for-pound stronger than steel. These features, along with the many other benefits of Sing Core, are what led the design teams to utilize our product.

Another large reason the company decided to go with Sing Core was in regards to the type of door they were wanting. Our panel was used to make a large pocket door, which are notoriously difficult. First, pocket doors are a variant of sliding doors that slide into a “pocket” within a wall instead of sliding in front of the wall itself. These doors must be perfectly straight, otherwise they will not fit within the tight space in the wall. Pocket doors are also severely limited on their weight, as a heavy pocket door can prove difficult to use and damaging for the hardware.

Another major complication with pocket doors, especially of this size, is the risk of warping. A warped door is never good, and often leads to total structure failure and replacement. The larger the door, however, the more likely it is to warp due to the increased tension on the surface. Plus, with pocket doors, even the slightest warp can ruin the door and stop it from functioning. A little bend can cause the rollers to jam or break, or if the warp is significant enough, it can start to scrape along the wall inside, or get stuck in the pocket entirely. Luckily, Sing Core doors never warp, and are guaranteed to not warp or fail for 50 Years.

A Successful Project

Despite all of this, an excellent design, a skilled construction crew, and a flawless Sing Core panel led to a gorgeous condo within this incredible building. Unique projects such as these are what allow the luxury design world to thrive, and Sing Core is proud to have been involved in something that is such a testament to this industry.

Your Client Requested a Custom Door, Now What?

When an architect is tasked with designing a custom door for a project, there are a number of factors that must be considered in order to ensure that the end result is not only visually pleasing, but also functional and durable. One solution that has been gaining popularity among architects is the use of Sing Core in unique and custom door designs.

What is Sing Core?

Sing Core is a composite material that is made using our patented honeycomb core, resulting in a lightweight yet incredibly strong and stable material. It is particularly well-suited for use in door design due to its ability to resist warping, cracking, and other forms of damage that can be caused by environmental hazards and use.

When working with Sing Core, architects have a wide range of design options available to them. The material can be made to fit virtually any size or shape, and can be finished with a variety of materials and finishes to match the surrounding decor. Additionally, Sing Core is an environmentally friendly material, as it is made from sustainably harvested wood and does not contain any harmful chemicals or other elements.

How to Use Sing Core for Custom Doors

There are a number of ways in which an architect can incorporate Sing Core into a custom door design. For cases where a large, shaped, or abnormally scaled door is needed, you can simply provide those specifications to us during the order, and we’ll make the panel entirely custom for you. Or, if you need a high quality core to build your own custom design on top of, Sing Core works great for that as well. You can request a panel without a skin or finishing, allowing you to put your own artistry on it. You can also attach Sing Core panels together to create massive doors, should they be required. Either of these options result in a door that is both strong and visually appealing, with a high degree of customizability in terms of size, shape, and finish. There are also several optional features you can request when ordering a Sing Core panel.

Perks of Sing Core for Custom Doors

Regardless of the specific design approach chosen, the use of Sing Core in custom door design offers a number of benefits to architects and their clients. First and foremost, Sing Core doors are incredibly strong and durable, making them ideal for use in high-traffic areas or in locations where security is a concern. Additionally, the lightweight nature of Sing Core means that these doors can be easily installed and operated, reducing the risk of damage during the installation process or excess wear on the hardware.

Another benefit of using Sing Core in custom door design is its ability to resist warping and other forms of damage that can be caused by changes in temperature and humidity. This makes Sing Core doors ideal for use in areas with high levels of moisture or temperature fluctuations, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or areas exposed to direct sunlight. In fact, Sing Core is one of, if not the only product on the market that offers a 50 Year Guarantee against warping. That warranty also covers structural failure, so you can rest assured that this will last your client a very long time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the use of Sing Core in custom door design offers architects a number of benefits, including strength, durability, and customizability. Whether used as a core material or as a veneer, Sing Core doors are an excellent choice for any project that requires a high degree of customization and durability. With their unique combination of strength, stability, and beauty, Sing Core doors are sure to be a popular choice among architects and their clients for years to come.

Sing Core Pocket Doors (Hidden Doors)

What is a Pocket Door?

Pocket doors are a type of sliding door that slides into a pocket in the wall instead of in front of or behind it. A variant of the pocket door is a “hidden door”, named that due to their hidden nature and the ability to create a nearly invisible door when closed.

Pocket Doors

Pocket doors are popular for many reasons, one of which is their space saving nature. Traditional sliding doors require the nearby space along the wall to remain empty so that they can open and move into that area. Pocket doors, however, are built to slide directly into the wall, and as such allow you to put furniture, decorations, or anything else along the walls nearby.

Pocket doors often require more engineering to make work, as they need a finished pocket with suitable space inside the nearby wall. This does present a potential hurdle in the construction of your door, however if you plan on doing this before starting construction, it is easy to work into the plans. Also, you can have a pocket door installed in a pre-existing wall assuming the wall is thick enough to allow for it, or you have the means of altering said wall.

Pocket doors are a fun and creative way to provide access to a room, and also tend to last longer than traditional sliding doors seeing as, when opened, they are not exposed to traffic or the elements. If you’re considering the options for a new door in your home or office, consider a pocket door for a unique and fun result!

Hidden Doors

One popular style of pocket doors are hidden doors, which function the same way, but have some added features to make them practically invisible. Hidden doors are usually designed to blend into the wall around them, providing a near-seamless exterior and, thus, proving incredibly difficult to spot, even if you’re walking right by it. Hidden doors work very similarly to pocket doors, using rails to slide into a hidden space within the nearby wall. Where they differ is that hidden doors often have an additional mechanism to press them up to be flush with the nearby wall, adding to their hidden nature.

Where Sing Core Comes In

Sing Core advanced panels can be used to build sliding doors of any style, including pocket and hidden doors. Our panels are super strong and lightweight, so you get assurance that they can hold up to use, plus their lightweight nature extends the life of the hardware, and as such the door, by a significant amount. Our panels also have a 50-Year Warp Free Guarantee, meaning your door will never warp or twist and become unusable. Many doors risk warping due to their flat and incredibly precise nature, and even the slightest of warps can completely ruin a door’s appearance and functionality. With Sing Core, you never have to worry about your door warping, and we give you 50 years of promise to prove that.

Why Sliding Doors are Taking Over the Industry

Sliding Doors are Taking Over

From hinge doors to incredibly unique doors, there are many popular designs to choose from when deciding what kind of front, feature, or office door you want. A style that is becoming increasingly popular is the sliding door.

Why Sliding Doors?

Sliding doors are unique when compared to most other forms of entry on the market, given one main feature: they slide. Obvious, we know, but it’s an important distinction to make, since that one aspect brings a wide range of advantages.

First, a sliding door has a tiny footprint when compared to most other door options. Any entryway that swings out or folds to the side has a functional footprint that is much larger than the door itself, as it usually takes up its full length on two axes. A sliding door does not have that limitation, as instead of swinging open, it instead slides over the wall, over itself, or into a concealed pocket. This greatly reduces its footprint and keeps the surrounding area clear of any “door swing”.

Second, a sliding door offers a few additional options and features over a traditional hinge or pivot door. Sliding doors can be large or small, and the general installation remains the same, whereas particularly large doors of other varieties can require special hardware or reinforcement of the door jam. Sliding doors are also easy to adapt to nearly any setting, with just a few slight modifications. Do you want a sliding door that can lock and secure a room? That can be done with ease. Are you looking for a spectacular door that can open up into a large room in a unique way, like this sliding door as Laserfiche that Sing Core made possible? With a traditional swing door that would be difficult, but with sliding doors, it becomes a beautiful centerpiece that people will talk about for years to come.

And Third, sliding doors are the modern pick. Simply put, swing doors are out and sliding doors are in. If you’re looking for a way to bring some extra flair to a modern build, a sliding door is a great way to do it. They look great, function easily, and fit the streamlined and sleek concept that is taking over so many design trends. Don’t get us wrong, hinge and pivot doors are still fantastic options, and they have their uses, but the modern architect is moving toward sliding doors as the go-to option.

Summary

Sing Core can help create amazing doors of any style, and we by no means want to discourage people from using pivot, hinge, or other door types if that’s what they are set on! When it comes to modern designs, office buildings, and other scenarios where you may want to build a trendy, fun, and sleek atmosphere, sliding doors are the best option. From visuals to functionality, sliding doors are the way of the future, and Sing Core, we can make your sliding door dream a reality!

Pocket Door

Pocket doors have become an integral part of modern architectural design.  Despite the many advantages of pocket doors, they do present unique challenges in both the manufacturing and the installation process.

pair of 14 ft. x 3.5 ft. x 2.5 in. warp-free sliding pocket doors

About Pocket Doors

Pocket doors are desirable as they are invisible in the opened position as the pocket sliding doors are hidden away in cavities within the walls in one, or two opposing, wall(s). Pocket doors serve as a retractable room divider, functioning as an elegant and effective method to separate one large space or two adjoining spaces, while the sliding door divider(s) disappear(s) into the wall.

Proceed with caution, as pocket doors can be hugely problematic if they move according to changes in the surrounding environment. A warped pocket door will damage the finish as it rubs against neighboring surfaces and if it bends or cups too much can get lodged inside the wall, and the bigger the pocket door, the greater likelihood of warping.

There are many reasons to have your pocket doors made with Sing Core but the number 1 reason is to stop worrying about warped pocket doors once and for all by specifying

Sing Core Inside Your Pocket Door

Thanks to inventor Peter Sing’s patented and patent-pending large pocket door technologies, you can have an Eco-friendly pocket door that is lightweight, high strength, fully insulated for sound deadening and climate control, covered by Sing’s

50 Year Warp-free and Structure Guarantee

There is no other way to build a high precision (Sing Core tolerance is +/- .006 in.) sustainable pocket door that can remain straight and true, spanning the test of time.

The Best Pocket Doors

Sing Core has become known for making some of the largest, most impressive sliding doors on the market.  Pocket doors are sliding doors that slide into a pocket in the wall.  Certain customers have come to know Sing Core, not only for our sliding doors, but also for our magnificent pocket doors.  Introducing the best pocket doors!

Pocket Door Challenges

The concept of pocket doors seems simple very simple.  They are similar to sliding doors in that they slide on tracks and typically use rollers to open and close.  The big difference is that they slide into a pocket that has fixed dimensions inside the wall.  If the door warps or skews, the door cease to function.  You will not be able to open or close the door because warping will change the dimensions of the door.

Warp Free Pocket Door

Over decades, we have developed our patented and patent pending materials that allow for super strong, light weight, warp free door construction.  Warping and skewing present significant problems for pocket doors, because pocket doors must slide into a fixed space inside the wall.  Any deviation from specifications will prevent the door from fitting into the space.  When this happens, your door will cease to function.  You will need to buy a new door, change out your hardware that may bend or break as a result of door malfunction.  In some cases, you also need to rebuild your door frame or your walls when they are ruined from doors being opened and closed.

But we have solved all of the problems associated with large pocket doors and large sliding doors.  When you use Sing Core products, you not only get a door that exceeds AWI standards in terms of warpage, you also get a door that’s guaranteed against warping for 50 years.  Because of our special design methods, you will get a door that ensures proper functionality for decades.

Large Pocket Doors

The larger the door the bigger the challenge.  Large pocket doors are more susceptible to warping.  In order to function properly, they must be specially designed to resist warping.  Larger doors must be specially constructed so that they are warp free on installation, as well as, over time.

Ultra High Strength – A large pocket door must be exceptionally strong to stand up to the most rigorous use.  At Sing Core, we have revolutionized door strength with Peter Sing’s patented and patent pending technology that allows us to build doors that are very high strength, tested independently at over 660 PSI.

Super Light Weight – Up to 90% lighter than solid wood doors.  Sing Core’s specially engineered core uses Peter Sing’s revolutionary design to bring a solid door strength to doors that allows for super light weight performance.

Straight/Warp Free – Specially designed stiffeners built into our doors make sure your doors are warp free over the long haul for better performance and function.

Structurally Stable – With our groundbreaking process, we can make doors that are built exactly to your specifications, and will not skew or shift over time.  That way, you have a door that functions worry free for decades.

Eco-friendly – We support sustainability by using renewable, eco-friendly materials, so our products are better on the environment.

Guaranteed – When it comes to guarantees, no company on the market can do better.  Our Sing Core Professional Panels are used for doors and other high end applications where stability and precision are of the utmost importance.  All of our Sing Core Professional panels come with a whopping 50 Year Guarantee against warping, cracking, breaking, and skewing.  Name one other company who can do this.  Most companies don’t even offer a one year guarantee, but we can do this because our products have such a strong track record of performance.

No one can make panels as large, yet warp free like we can!  You have our guarantee on that.

Proudly Made in America

All of our products are 100% made in the USA.  We take pride in supporting our country.  That’s why you won’t find any products that aren’t made in America here.  We also use high quality inputs that are sourced from local suppliers.

Door Skins

Our door system allows you to specify almost any skin for your doors.  We specialize in high quality wood and metal doors.  We have several options depending on your budget.  Our paint grade ply option is our most economical option.  Next is our hardwood veneer option.  Mahogany, oak, walnut, and alder are popular.  We also use 1/8″ wood stave on our highest end option, which gives you a solid wood appearance, but has our specially engineered core to maintain the light weight feature our doors are famous for.  We also make metal doors.  In our metal doors category, we specialize in cold rolled steel, but we also have a very popular aluminum option.

Top 7 Pocket Door Problems and Solutions

The pocket door has been one of the more interesting types of doors that is not only functional but clever in its ability be secluded out of sight, like a hidden door or room divider. Pocket doors are doors that slide into the wall. Also referred to as a cavity sliding door, a sliding cavity door is just like what it’s called, as the door is hidden inside a cavity inside the wall when in its opened position.

As the best architects, millworks and door manufacturers realize that while these types of doors are an effective and brilliant combination of brilliance and creativity, the pocket door does present a few problems associated with their use. That’s why you want to use the best pocket door system.

The Top 7 Problems with Pocket Doors Solved

1. Pocket Doors Warp – Problem

Let’s admit it; the number one problem associated with pocket doors is door warping. A warped sliding pocket door is a huge problem because there is usually a nominal amount of space on either side of the door when the door is snuggled inside the sliding door cavity. A little warp will damage the finish of the door, while a more severely warped pocket door will cause the door to get lodged within the wall, making it difficult to pull out without causing other complications or damage.

1. Pocket Doors Warp – Solution

Sing Core provides the best pocket door manufactures with the only lightweight warp-free pocket door core which is based on a combination of patented reinforced insulated vertical grain torsion box core and composite anti-warp stiffening inserts (patent pending) to provide the only warp-free solution regardless of building materials used (even solid wood stave).

2. Pocket Door Weight – Problem

As a rule pocket doors are pretty heavy, and they’re made to be heavier, because unless you know better, you think that the thicker the door is the less it will tend to move, which is the bane of all wood pocket doors. In the case of pocket doors, adding weight is not the answer, unless you’re in the pocket door maintenance and repair niche.

2. Pocket Door Weight – Solution

The Sing Core lightweight pocket door solution revolves around the lightest weight Eco-friendly pivot door core weighing-in at a fraction of the weight of other wood-based solid wood core. Superior lightweight performance without compromising strength, precision or performance.

3. Pocket Door Repair – Problem

When you have problems with your pocket door it’s going to be a costly issue when dealing with pocket door repair. Why? Unlike other fixed doors which are exposed your pocket sliding door is generally not seen in its opened position, making access to the door unlikely without having to remove the wall supplying the door’s cavity.
If you have to pay for pocket door repair, keep in mind, it may be costly and it will cost you many times the cost of your door over time, especially if it is a wooden door because it will be even more susceptible to warp. While repairing a door can be costly, it might save you money by considering pocket door replacement every so often.

3. Pocket Door Repair – Solution

Sing Core is unprecedented in its reparability. For instance, you could skewer your pocket completely through with fork lift forks and repair it on site by cutting out the damaged area with a chainsaw, glue in a new piece of Sing Core, putty, sand and finish the pocket door and it’s just like new. No compromising the strength or integrity of the original Sing Core pocket door, without even dismantling the door.

4. Pocket Door Hardware – Problem

Pocket door maintenance will include maintaining the hardware, and if your door is a heavy one. The more you use it, the more maintenance will be necessary over time. Plus heavy pocket doors can also compromise the pocket door frame as well as the structure due to stress and strain of operating your door over time. Heavy pocket doors require expensive heavy duty hardware for heavy doors because the pocket door hardware is based on the pocket door’s weight.

4. Pocket Door Hardware – Solution

Since the Sing Core composite pocket door core solution is so lightweight, you can save so much money on being able to use lightweight pocket door hardware (since pocket door hardware is based on weight), not to mention the savings in transporting, handling, manpower and equipment necessary to install the completed pocket door system.

5. Pocket Door Precision – Problem

The problem with pocket doors is that it is difficult to make them with any degree of precision, due to the limitation of the building materials and manufacturing process. Natural wood moves, so it could be straight and true upon installation, but not long after. If welding is used in the manufacturing process, this may also cost you your pocket door’s precision. A single pocket door may not require high precision if it is the only door in the cavity, but what if there are other doors sharing the same space, precision is of primary importance.

5. Pocket Door Precision – Solution

No other Eco-friendly, lightweight high-strength pocket door core can compare to Sing Core in terms of high precision. With the highest tolerances (+/- .006 in.) patented Sing Core can be sanded, milled or machined so precisely, that’s why you see Sing Core everywhere from beneath the ocean (U.S. Navy) to outer space (NASA) and everywhere in between when high precision and dimensional stability are the most important factors.

6. Double Pocket Door – Problem

The highest precision is necessary to accommodate more than one pocket door in the wall’s cavity which is an invitation for constant maintenance, as multiple pocket doors (2 or more) are rubbing up against themselves due to lack of precision or warp gone wild.

6. Double Pocket Door – Solution

Sharing the same pocket door cavity with not just double pocket doors, but multiple doors, is no problem for patented Sing Core. No pocket door core material is as lightweight, Eco-friendly or high precision. You can stack many doors side by side inside your wall cavity packed very tightly with very little wiggle room, and you, your architect, millwork or pocket door manufacturer won’t have to worry about your doors staying straight and true.

7. Large Pocket Doors – Problem

The bigger the pocket door, the bigger the problems. Large pocket doors are the most problematic because they are big, they are heavy, and if they’re over 7 ft. tall and/or 3.5 ft. wide they will be heavier, meaning more expensive hardware that could be many times the cost of the door, increased maintenance due to even more stress on the pocket door frame as well as the structure. What about the warping? Large pocket doors are just asking for trouble, because building one out of standard building materials is a little better than building it out of fresh spaghetti.

7. Large Pocket Doors – Solution

The bigger they are the brighter Sing Core shines through. You can build a 34 ft. tall large pocket door that weighs about 10 percent of its solid predecessor and will not warp, bend, twist of otherwise fail. Your large pocket door can be made of any flat building material in any size and can be guaranteed for 10 full years of faithful service. That’s why the biggest door manufacturers in the world use nothing but Sing Core in their large oversized doors.
