Sing Core is based on torsion box technology that has been used in the wood working trade for thousands of years, and is often compared to lightweight core, honeycomb core and other composite building materials in the industry. It is also compared to SIP (structural insulated panels) with the exception that structural insulated panels actually do not have the structural grids that are necessary for strength, making SIP less than 10% the strength of Sing Core.

Compare to Other Types of Door Core

Paper Door Core

The most popular core material used in retail doors is paper core also known as cardboard core and honeycomb core. The most attractive feature of paper core is that it is light weight, nearly as lightweight as hollow core, with very little added strength. These lightweight doors are often used in apartment buildings and housing units because they are lightweight and less likely to injure children in door-related accidents. The downside is that there is no structural integrity and it is not long before the door fails due to warp, bend or twist. Paper core doors also have no insulative or sound-deadening qualities and are fairly easy to damage as it does not take much to puncture, crack or break a paper core door.

Foam Door Core

The next most popular core used in retail doors is foam core. While still yielding a lightweight door, much like the paper core, it also does not have any strength. Foam has a very low compression strength (+/- 10 PSI) resulting in high failure rates, and will not remain straight as the only strength in the foam core door is provided by the exterior skin material. To achieve strength, more heavy material must be added to the surface of the door, cancelling out the lightweightedness of the door. While a stronger foam core door may be extremely heavy due to reinforcement, the foam will offer some insulative value and limited sound deadening.

Particle Board Door Core

Particle board is the third-most popular core used in retail doors. Customer seeking a higher quality door than paper or foam core are often persuaded to purchase the particle board core door because it appears to be a real door, especially when compared to the lighter weight doors on the sales floor. The heaviness of the door implies that the door has strength in comparison to the less expensive paper or foam core doors; only much heavier, particle board doors do not offer much additional strength, and commonly fail over time (though it is harder to punch-through a particle board door than a paper or foam core door).

LVL Door Core

LVL door core is a reasonable solution for door core, as it consists of multiple layers of veneer bonded together to make a solid core material. The problems that result from LVL come from resulting in an extremely heavy door that will not survive changing temperatures very well over time. Though it does have some warp and twist resistance, failure is experience in the long term effects that lead to delamination. Once the lamination in the door’s interior begins to fail, the door will not function properly and may become unsightly.

Solid Wood Door Core

Solid wood core is expensive because it uses a large amount of precious natural resources and for traditional enthusiasts it is sought out for the sake of originality and/or trueness to nature, though it is not a responsible use of natural resources. Solid wood doors have no insulation or sound deadening qualities are heavy and have little or no structural integrity due to the nature of the characteristics of the natural grain. The solid wood doors often fail due to bend, warp, twist and will not be able to secure properly.

Balsa Wood Core

There are several advantages to using balsa wood as door core. Balsa wood is an excellent alternative to other types of core, because it is a natural organic product, but the problem is that it is in short supply making it a more expensive resource and does not fare well when exposed to water (acting like a sponge soaking up water and moisture). Also, since it is a natural wood grain source material, it is prone to warp, bend and twist, just like any other natural wood fiber door core.

Plastic Core

Plastic door core is a good upgrade from paper core in that it is still lightweight, is resistant to moisture but doesn’t offer any other benefits over paper core except for a minor increase of strength. Plastic core is still weak/unstable, non-insulated and can be damaged or will fail easily within a short lifespan.

Fire retardant doors made with our patented Sing honeycomb/torsion box cores. Natural wood lock blocks are positioned at locations as necessary for locking mechanism placement or as anchor points. The core material is wood framed by 1 ¾ “ natural wood for finishing strength and attaching hardware. The torsion box is completed by adhering noncombustible 3mm Magnesium Board (standard) which results in 0 Flame Spread and 0 Flame Development.

Additional exterior (skin) options can be applied to the fire retardant door to meet your specifications and/or match appearance of designed structure. Bonding agent used in adhesion of the entire composite material is formaldehyde-free. The fire retardant Magnesium Board is a Class A product that meets ASTM E 84 certifications.

Lightweight

Your Sing Fire Retardant Door weighs more than 60% less than other fire retardant doors when compared to other core materials. The reduced weight allows Sing Fire Retardant Doors to be utilized an applications where larger or heavier doors are just not practical or feasible.

Delivery: Reasonable care is taken to ensure safe transportation of your Sing Core fire retardant door from factory to your location including proper crating to protect the natural beauty of your door during transport.

Storage and Protection: Store your fire retardant Sing Core door in an upright position and allow to acclimate to room temperature following shipment receipt or prior to finishing or installation.

Preparation: Per manufacturer’s specifications, ensure that door frame openings are constructed plumb, true and level prior to installation. Select fasteners of adequate type, number and quality to assure proper function.

Installation: Installer shall be specialized in the installation of the type of work that is associated with the project and will comply with manufacturer’s installation policies and procedures to ensure proper end use.

Verify that hinging and latching assemblies operate freely and correctly

Finishing: The finishing of the Sing Core fire retardant door is the responsibility of the client due to the product being delivered in paint-grade quality unless specified otherwise in writing. Any sealing must be in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications to protect against a variety of environmental conditions as necessary.

Seal all 6 surfaces with two coat minimum on operable panel(s)
Finishing or re-finishing must be completed following acclimatization and installed within 7 days
Avoid finishing after rain (or damp) or during periods of higher than average humidity
At least once a year, conduct periodic inspections of coating to ensure no door components are exposed
Reseal the surface as necessary

Machining: Sing Core fire retardant doors are easy to work with in the millwork shop for CNC machining or on-site for finishing, sawing, sanding, cutting and fastening. No specialized skills or equipment is necessary, other than standard woodworking tools. Treat Sing Core fire retardant doors just like you would any other standard door blank.

Strength Performance: Patented Sing Core has an unsurpassed strength as compared to other lightweight substrate materials tested at 660 PSI (based on 2″ x 2″ grids and 3/4″ thick) for superior structural integrity and is resistant to warp, twist and crack when compared to other materials.

Light Weight Performance: Sing Core weighs much less than other traditional building materials, as much as 50% less; or more, as little as 4 lbs. per sq. ft. yet sustainable and true green technology.

Insulation Performance: Standard Sing Core doors feature built-in insulation value with an R3 (can be upgraded to to R6.5 or more) rating per inch, depending on architect’s specifications.

Acoustical Performance: Sing Core standard doors have a natural sound-deadening quality for noise control. Standard sound transmission class (STC) is 30. Additional noise control specifications can be met at the behest of the customer or designer and must be noted in advance.

How to Build a Big Door

There’s a good chance that if you’ve struggled with all the potential problems that one might face with attempting to build a big door that will not warp, bend or twist, there are many challenges that you will face, especially if you don’t want your big door to be extremely heavy. Heavy door cause strain on the hardware and structure increasing the need for regular maintenance and upkeep.

Sing Core makes the largest, most dimensionally, stable large oversize, eco-friendly aluminum doors that are used by the most prestigious millworks and high-end users. Only Sing Aluminum oversized doors can be large, thin and extremely flat.

The beauty of large oversize Sing Aluminum doors is that they can be any height, any width, any thickness and can be manufactured in as little as three days.

The advantage of fusing the Sing Core material with aluminum, is that is nearly impervious to changing weather conditions and retains its true flatness and structural integrity over long spans and is the standout solution for big sliding doors, that will fail if not maintaining perfect straight structural integrity over a long service life.
