The Sing Core substrate material is created using a vertical grain natural wood torsion box design while the traditionally empty voids are filled wall to wall with recycled foam. The foam material is available in various forms depending on your specification. The default is recycled EPS foam. Natural wood lock blocks can be positioned at locations as necessary for locking mechanism placement or as anchor points. The core material is framed by 1.25-inch wood stiles and rails for finishing strength and attaching hardware. The torsion box is completed by adhering 16 gauge cold rolled steel as exterior material (skin) according to your specifications.

The door blank surface material is made of 16 gauge cold rolled steel unless otherwise specified. Bonding agent used in adhesion of the entire composite material is formaldehyde-free.

Large Door Component Assembly: The largest doors (see 10×10 example drawing tot he right) may not be easily transported from the factory to the job site. In cases such as these doors are divided into two or more modular components and joined together on site using patented Sing biscuit joining method. This method results in a near seamless joining of two or more door blanks without compromising flatness or structural integrity.

Interior Blocking: Solid wood implants can be inserted as lock blocks or anchor points. Also additional stiles (vertical wood implants) or rails (horizontal wood implants) can be positioned at any desired location inside the cold rolled steel door. (Note: Depending on your expectations, solid wood implants should be supported by at least 12 inches of Sing Core material to maintain true flatness.)

Delivery: Reasonable care is taken to ensure safe transportation of your Sing Core cold rolled steel door from factory to your location including proper crating to protect the natural beauty of your cold rolled steel doors during transport.

Finishing: The finishing of the Sing Core standard cold rolled steel doors is the responsibility of the client due to the product being delivered in unfinished condition unless specified otherwise in writing for use in interior applications only. Any exterior use must be approved in advance to avoid warranty exception and sealing must be in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications to protect against a variety of environmental conditions as necessary. In reference to exterior applications:

  • Seal all 6 surfaces with two coat minimum on operable panel(s)
  • Finishing or re-finishing must be completed following acclimatization and installed within 7 days

  • At least once a year, conduct periodic inspections of coating to ensure no wall panel components are exposed

The Crestmark Architectural Millworks Team

One of Crestmark’s special abilities is to work hand-in-hand with the contractor to achieve the architect’s vision in a creative process involving the delicate balance of high precision and performance, visual and mechanical aesthetics, logistics and budget considerations.

According to President Sean Olsen, “We have a reputation of being very creative, using products like SingCore to achieve what the architect wants, while making it a practical thing to do.”

A case in point: Crestmark was approached by Webcor Builders to provide solutions for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), who required a sensitive artwork storage area with very low volatile organic compounds (VOC) and unique design characteristics, such as 10 foot tall cabinet doors with hidden hardware and 1/8 inch reveals between doors. Crestmark Senior Manager, Jim Farahmand, says “Regarding size, weight, and stability concerns, it was obvious conventional composite cores were going to be prohibitive.”

Originally, the Crestmark team had discovered SingCore as a resource for “building 16 foot torsion box shop table tops that needed to be dead-flat.” Says Olsen, “We looked at SingCore and thought it was light and had the look the Museum required as well as stability sufficient for the application.”

“SingCore’s engineers and fabricators were flexible and able to provide a fully sealed core, custom blocking, aluminum cladding, and facing materials with paintable surfaces to satisfy the architect’s stringent requirements.”

Production Manager, Patrick Silva, recalls how easy the SingCore material was to work with, “I was surprised at how light the material was. Normally a four foot by ten foot door core weighs a couple hundred pounds, but instead it was light enough almost to handle the entire piece myself,” Silva continues, “I’ve had issues with warped panels before, and to have this material which is so nice, flat, stable and easy to work with is great.” Silva also applauds the support staff at SingCore in terms of pre-engineering the panels to, “have slightly larger perimeter blocking and aluminum cladding so that we could trim them down and band the edges in our shop.”

Once the cabinetry was installed, Crestmark’s installation crew were able to maneuver and align the doors to the cases, and report that “the weight factor of the 10 foot tall [SingCore] doors was a huge advantage,” recalling that the installation of the cabinetry into the wall was the most challenging part of the job, not attaching the large doors as one might expect.

Initial invitations to bid can range from very complete, with detailed architectural specifications, to rudimentary drawings and concepts. Airbnb, Inc. was one such new client who approached Crestmark with plans calling for “two large sliding doors 20 to 25 feet long by 9 to 10 feet tall that could be operated on either side of a concrete wall.
