Sliding doors at Laserfiche’s New Headquarters

Sing Core is honored to be part of making an innovative workspace for Laserfiche in Long Beach, CA.

RDC of Long Beach California designed these doors to work seamlessly with this interior workspace. Following the design of RMC, Seeley Brothers Millwork of Brea California used four custom made Sing Core panels to complete this project for Laserfiche.

These Sing Core sliding doors are used to allow these workspaces to feel like one larger room and a second later be a quiet and private meeting space. Sing Core doors naturally dampen noise of an active workspace to easily allow other employees to concentrate and be more productive. These were some of the core ideas that Laserfiche had when building their new Headquarters.

These elegant lightweight doors are extremely strong and durable. They are made of the highest quality material suitable for any museum, mansion or workspace.

As you can see these doors have to be completely straight to allow a perfectly matched seam when they are closed.

Laserfiche is a leading global prover of business process and information management software. They have been part of the Long Beach community since 2001. They were founded over 45 years ago and also have offices in Washington DC, Guadalajara, Hong Kong, London, Shanghai and Toronto. 320 of the 425 employees are in the Long Beach area and they are steadily growing.

Their new headquarters was completed in May of 2022. It is over 100,000 square feet, with four floors and a parking garage. It can accommodate 550 full-time employees working in-office and up to 750 hybrid workers. Studio One Eleven’s design mirrors a landmark garden-office building across the street designed by the late Mid-Century architect Edward Killingsworth. They incorporated such Mid-Century Modern elements as large windows and terrace decks that provide amble natural lighting. The height is the same as the adjacent building allowing to blend in seamlessly. Chris Wacker, chief executive of Laserfiche, Wacker called the space “extremely functional and useful in a hybrid environment.”

The design layout shifted the service core to the western edge of the building, typically in the center. This allows a larger continuous communal and workspace environment. This also blocks the western solar heat. Now the elevator is tucked away and the stairs are front and center, promoting the healthier option of taking the stairs.

Laserfiche was committed to staying in the Long Beach area and are in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood. Here on Long Beach Boulevard near the San Diego Freeway, their Mid-Century landmark makes a bold statement to the half a million daily drivers who pass by. Before Laserfiche purchased this land, it was considered an unusable wasteland left over from oil extraction years. They capped off the old oil wells and removed the old hazardous tanks.

The most common problem for garage doors is the continuous exposure to the outdoor elements. Which subjects one side of the door to daily changes in temperature while the other side sees a constant interior temperature. This is where a solid wood garage door would fail and crack due to the wood expanding and contracting inside the door. Wood Skinned

The best choice for a wood garage door is AB plywood or marine plywood. There’s no need to worry about the plywood cracking with the inclusion of proper finishing when using Sing Core thanks to our patented and patent-pending torsion box “honeycomb” design. This is why they are used on our Sing Core homes.

Wood Stave

A superior addition to any door is to add wood stave to the face. Our most common wood stave products are clear cedar and douglas fir. With wood stave applied, the door looks like it’s made of solid wood.
Unlike a thin .020 wood veneer; wood stave can be sanded and repaired if damaged. Making wood stave a more durable solution to high traffic areas or commercial applications.
Does your customer need a rugged wood stave skin or a thin veneer? Ask one of our knowledgeable sales engineers about the pros and cons of different skin options and they would be happy to walk you through your options.

1/8″ wood stave is all that is necessary to make your door look like it is made completely out of solid wood. But the secret inside is that your door is exponentially stronger and more stable than a standard solid wood door. Your Sing Core door is also almost a third of the weight of a comparably sized solid wood door. Being lightweight expands the choices of hardware, reduces labor costs to install, and is safer in inclimate weather. This applies to all doors with Sing Core inside; pivot doors, sliding doors, pocket doors, carriage doors, bi fold doors, and other doors with unique hardware configurations. Being approached by a client who is in need of a uniquely large pivot door to withstand the difficult climates of Lake Tahoe can seem like a near impossible feat. This pivot door needed to be lightweight for ease of installation and daily use by the client, impact resistant to hold up to everyday use, sound deadening to drown out the hustle and bustle of everything outside

Opposing wood species

Dissimilar wood species on the interior and exterior of the door means differing rates of expansion and contraction. SingCore has the strength and stability to remain rigid against the push and pull of the dissimilar skins.

Now let’s take a look at why this door needs to be lightweight.

First off, big pivots doors tend to be very heavy which makes them more difficult to manage, they require custom made specialized hardware and require a lot of maintenance due to the stress that the pivot door adds to the structure.
Secondly a pivot door is only held with two points of contact on the top and bottom of the pivot door; meaning that if the door warps or twists, the door operation will be degraded or completely fail.

A pivot door this size with a solid core will weigh around 800lbs before any skins are added.
Now with SingCore, this door’s weight is a fraction of what other solid pivot doors would have weighed. This weight savings translates into a reduced overall budget by having lower shipping costs, lower hardware cost and lower cost for the labor of the installation.

Architectural Specification Substitutes

Due to being the newly invented and possibly the most significant improvement in building materials in the last century, it is not uncommon to see Sing products recommended as substitutes for products in the original specifications initially specified by architects. Even though Sing Core is new, we are not that new and have years of experience to assure or most demanding clients that they only deliver the best to their clients.

Lightweight

One of important advantages of sing Core is its lightweightedness when compared to other building products. Other traditional building components that can even come close to matching the lightweight characteristics of Sing Core are extremely weak and have little or no structural integrity. This might be acceptable for visual representation upon installation, but may deteriorate rapidly over time, something that you might need to consider in the design process.

Sing Core is super strong, so strong, in fact, that independently tested results from the University of Washington revealed a PSI of 660-to-over-1,100 pounds per square inch of compression strength, which is stronger than steel pound for pound. In fact, current regulations for flatness allow for a ¼” of deflection over a 6 foot span. How to Specify Sing Core Inside Your Doors

When specifying Sing Core inside your doors, you can specify “Sing Core” as the manufacturer but note that the doors will need to be finished by a millwork or custom door manufacturer. This about how this might impact the price (important for contractor during price estimations). It would also be helpful to also specify weight ratio of “3 to 4 pounds per square foot” and “50 year warp-free guarantee,” to prevent substitution by the contractor. You don’t want your client to end up with a substituted non-Sing door and be unaware of it until it warps later (see example).

Does Your Door Have Sing Core Inside?

If your door has Sing Core inside it can come with a full 50-year warp-free guarantee. No other door can be guaranteed like that, unless it has Sing Core inside.

It is rare, but there have been occasions when a door has warped, when someone thought it had Sing Core inside, but it did not.

For instance, last year, an architect in Florida specified a large wooden door with Sing Core inside. The contractor contacted Sing Core and received an initial price quote.

Nine months later, we received a call from the architect who had been contacted by the building department that reported that a large wooden door with Sing Core inside had warped.

We searched our records and could not find any record of the job. We did discover the initial price quote request from the contractor who must have found a different way to make the large door.

Be forewarned, if your large wooden door doesn’t have Sing Core inside, you can expect it to warp.

Sing patented reinforced structural insulated panels start at ¾-to-1 inch in comparison to standard SIPs that start at 2-to-4 inches thick.

Sing Panels enable the builder to create designs that are frame-free because the built-in torsion box structure is more dimensionally stable than a standard stick-framed structure and they are pre-insulated for energy efficiency and sound deadening qualities.
