First off, big pivots doors tend to be very heavy which makes them more difficult to manage, they require custom made specialized hardware and require a lot of maintenance due to the stress that the pivot door adds to the structure.
Secondly a pivot door is only held with two points of contact on the top and bottom of the pivot door; meaning that if the door warps or twists, the door operation will be degraded or completely fail.

If you don’t already know, there’s a new way to build the best lightweight doors with the highest performance ratings in the industry using inventor Peter Sing’s patented and patent-pending technologies architects, door engineers, and door builders are able to create lightweight doors of enormous size which can be guaranteed to provide faithful fail-free service for 50 years.

How to Build a Lightweight Door

Since the late 1800’s experienced woodworkers have known the secret of building a wide, large flat wood surface was to use an interior torsion box which helped to resist the nature of wood grain to move according to changes in the environment. Torsion box was often incorporated into the designs of large spanning tabletops and very large doors. Even though the overall results were far better to build with torsion box than without it, these massive surfaces would move due to the natural wood surfaces.

A torsion box is a grid made of wood-framed boxes forming a flat grid inside of the large spanning exterior skins. This interior wood grid structure is time consuming to build, but effective in reducing the overall weight of the structure and resisting movement while increasing compression strength.

Technology presented less expensive honeycomb core alternatives to the original torsion box concept to as the answer to how to build a lightweight door quickly and inexpensively. Still, the standard honeycomb core boasts only a 10 to 110 PSI and has virtually little or no sheer strength.

Sing’s invention greatly improves on the tried and true benefits and design of torsion box substrates for building a lightweight door first by flipping the grain of the torsion box frame to perpendicular to the exterior skins. This minor tweak increased the strength of the torsion box (which used only horizontal oriented grain in the past) many times, but he wasn’t done, yet.

Then, Sing filled the voids of the torsion boxes wall to wall with rigid recycled foam insulation, creating a composite hybrid core that when sandwiched between two stress skins created a structurally sound solid hybrid composite panel which could span large areas unsupported.

This is the most effective way known how to build a lightweight door to date.

Sing’s invention has empowered architects and engineers to push the reaches of standard building materials by replacing traditional lumber or plywood with his Sing Panels. Nearly anything can be made with this new patented building material which has been independently tested to sport a minimum of 660 PSI and having the highest tolerances of any other building material (+/- .006 in.).
